How to Stay Motivated To Move During The Holidays

Whether you are staying home or traveling for the holidays, we all know how easy it is to get distracted.

But what if I said that I know how to help you stay motivated?

From working out with friends to what to wear, I've got you covered with tips that are guaranteed to have you moving.

SWEAT WITH FRIENDS AND FAMILY

It's easy to go into hibernation mode during the holidays - but that's where friends and family come in handy.

You can burn some calories and catch up with your loved ones, all while taking a fitness class.

Trying a new fitness class and scheduling it with a friend or family member helps you stay accountable and ensures you actually attend the class.

And even better, working out with someone you know can spark some healthy competition that could have you soaring up the leaderboard.

A study by the University of Southern California says that people who work out with friends or family enjoy their workout even more than when alone.

Now that you are on board, here is an article filled with science-backed reasoning to help you sell your case to your family and friends.

DRESS IN HOLIDAY GEAR

Who says you can't celebrate the holidays and work out at the same time?

Investing in winter workout clothes will not only keep you warm but inspire you to exercise.

You can stay in the holiday spirit, all while getting your sweat on.

Plus, the clothes you wear can help you get excited to exercise and can improve your performance.

"There is no difference between a person putting on fitness gear to exercise and an athlete putting on their uniform to play. They both are suiting up to perform," says Dr. Jonathan Fader, Director of Performance Coaching at SportStrata and former psychologist to the New York Mets and New York Giants.

"By putting on fitness clothes, a person prepares themselves for their part and starts the mental process of getting into character. As a result, it encourages them to remember that the task at hand is to work up a sweat and do it well," says Fader.

The best part is you can wear your new athleisure pieces just about anywhere, to hang out or to the gym.

Plus, you are more than likely to exercise if you are already dressed.

EXPLORE THE WORLD AROUND YOU

Why not make the best out of your exercise time by adding a little adventure to it?

To stay motivated during the holiday season, you can go on a guided run or walk through a fitness app like Nike's Free Run App and explore your surroundings.

Whether you are at home or traveling somewhere new, there is always something new to discover during your sweat session.

We recommend meditating on the beach or even yoga at a park in your old neighborhood.

Take your workout with you.

TAKE AN ACTIVE REST DAY

I understand that your holiday schedule is jam-packed, which is why I suggest you take an active rest day.

Now, that doesn't mean you can go crazy and skip out on a whole week. But you can pencil in an active rest day on days you know are going to be overwhelming and busy.

Active rest days provide your body an opportunity to recover and improve your fitness.

This includes going on a short walk while baking. Or freeze dancing with your family. If you live in a tropical paradise, you could even chill out and go for a swim.

No matter what you decide to do, an active rest day is essential.

With that said, enjoy the holidays and plan those workouts.

Happy Moving!
